Operating an Online Dating Website

You've seen the eHarmony ads on television and the Match.com banners on numerous websites, not to mention the various singles sites advertising on buses and taxis. You realize that bringing people together is a growing and profitable enterprise, but it is also a very competitive field that is difficult for many entrepreneurs to break into. Like any other company, running an online dating service requires a good business plan, vast research into the online dating market and a talent for marketing. Here are some points you should consider:

Getting Started

You are not going to be able to compete with giants like eHarmony and Match.com initially. Your business plan should reflect that reality. Your best course of action is a niche market. There are already dating sites that appeal to those of various ages, races and sexual orientation. You can find any number of other niches as well. For example, many sports enthusiasts seek someone who shares their passion, so why not create a dating site that appeals to fans of a certain sport or team? Or how about focusing on local book lovers? Or art aficionados? Once you discover that niche(s), you can later broaden your focus to grow your site. Your initial goal is to pull in singles and to increase visits to the website.

The next step is your web structure. Decide whether the focus of your website will concentrate specifically on networking or whether you want to develop a community as well. There are startup software packages available that offer customizable options for either choice. Look for packages that offer portals and architecture for ad support. Most of the revenue generated by your site will be through ad placements, so this is a feature is an important consideration. As your site clicks and page visits grow, so will your revenue.

Legalities

You will need to deal with some legal issues regarding your site. If you have staff or partners, you will need to enter into legal agreements regarding payment structures, shared profits and other business concerns. You also need to know what laws apply to your business. Consult with a lawyer experienced with business law as it applies to the Internet to make sure all of your contingencies are covered in case of any possible disputes. Your attorney should also help you set up online agreements and waivers to protect you and your company from third-party lawsuits.

Other legal issues to consider are age verification, trade name and copyright protection.

Up and Running

Know your target audience. Once you have decided on a niche, knowing your demographic will help you customize your site more strategically so that it pulls in more relevant traffic. You want your visitors to be able to easily set up profiles and search for their soul mates through multiple criteria including gender, geography, age, and interests. Your software package should allow database maintenance that will easily provide searches on various levels.

How will your members communicate with each other? To grow goodwill, you might consider allowing free trials before requiring subscriptions. How about allowing emails without subscription? Many sites create obstacles to communication, but a site without harsh restrictions will be sure to generate a good internet buzz which is instrumental to market survival.

Will your site feature message boards? Private messaging options? Web Cam shots? These features establish the network that will keep visitors and subscribers returning.

Another factor to success is great customer service. You don't want disgruntled customers and members, so you should determine how much of your budget you will set aside for extra staff to create a positive customer experience, or to perform necessary site maintenance.

Getting the Word Out

Now that you've built it, how do you get them to come to your site? Trial subscriptions are good, but marketing has to be multi-tiered to be effective. Offering other features like newsletters, or meet-and-greets for members is a good method. Interviews in local papers and radio stations can create a market buzz. Do not overload your subscribers with spam. If they've entrusted you with their contact information, they will feel betrayed if you fill their mailboxes with junk mail. If you want to send them occasional emails, get their permission when they sign up.

As your site grows, be sure to feature testimonials as well. Nothing says success better than the success of your subscribers; especially in the world of dating. Wish happy birthdays and anniversaries to members publicly to create a sense of community.

There are many factors that go into running a successful dating site. These are just a few to consider that will not only get you a return on your investment but most importantly, may bring couples together as well.
