Just Say No
Him: Honey, would you mind bringing this [pile of white-collar work shirts that I could just as easily bring myself] to the dry cleaner?
You: Sure, no problem.

Kid: Mom, I need an original dish for International Cultural Cuisine Month tomorrow. Can you make Grandma's famous lasagna?
You: Sure, no problem.

Coworker: I need to take a mental health day tomorrow [because I'm in desperate need of a mani-pedi]. Can you cover for me at the weekly?
You (slowly starting to pull out your hair): Sure, no problem.

Sound familiar? As Supermom, it's all too easy to "yes" yourself to death. Today, try the following: Erase "yes" from your vocabulary. You don't need to supply any excuses; the other moms will understand. When asked to do something that could potentially take away from collecting "me" time, simply smile sweetly and say "I'm afraid not." Depending on who's doing the asking, you can always follow up with some of the following addendums for extra effectiveness, like "Go ask your father" or "Why don't you try [so 'busy' doing her online shopping, banking and personal emailing from the office] Kathy?"

Then, take the hour or so (hopefully more) you saved by saying no and take to the bath or other locale of choice for uber-relaxation. Be sure to soak up every second. Got it? (It's okay to say yes.)

Shutter Babe
Any mom of a grade-schooler knows the painstaking thought process that goes into the yearly fall event known as school picture day. Laser or library backdrop? Wallet-sized for aunts and uncles or just grandparents? The lucky one, of course, is your charming child, who gets to show off his adorable mug in a fresh-faced photo year after year.

Wedding aside, when was the last time you got your photo taken by a pro? Of course, it goes without saying that every mom looks glowing and beautiful in those holding-the-newborn pics, but let's be honest -- it kinda all goes downhill from there. And when you're 80 and a grandma of six, wouldn't it be nice to look back on a stunning shot of you at [insert current age here] and think, Wow! I was a hot mom!

According to The Hot Mom's Handbook, a pro photo session can boost self-esteem and release your inner goddess. If you're feeling camera shy, round up a bunch of girlfriends to do it with you and mix group and solo shots. They'll make a great gift for your darling husband -- or, if you're a solo mom and looking -- the perfect incentive to finally post your pic on an online dating site. Check out community Websites, such as Craigslist, or local newspapers, such as PennySaver, to find a photographer near you. Say cheese!

Make New Friends...
But keep the old. You know the saying, your mom knows the saying and her mom knows the saying. Yet as we get older -- and our kids' lives start taking center stage while ours get nudged curtain-side -- that "keeping the old" concept gets harder and harder to manage. So we have a fab idea for getting back in touch with an oldie-but-goodie gal pal -- right now.

Whether it's a college mate you haven't seen since you tossed off your caps together at graduation, your fave cube-mate (read: partner in gossip) from your first job or even a current friend whom you constantly pledge to do lunch with, staying connected really is about little doses of effort.

Today, think about someone you owe a phone call and forward this email. It'll let her know you're thinking about her and how much you miss your closeness of yesteryear -- and that even though your former free time is now booked with the latest arts-and-crafts extravaganza or helping research yet another book report (yes, your child averages more homework per night in fourth grade than you did as a college freshman) -- you promise you'll make time for that much-needed catch-up call ASAP.

The new (virtual) greeting card warm-and-fuzzy -- it's as easy as clicking that Forward icon.

Phone tag out of control? Forward this to a hard-to-pin-down friend.

Turn Over a New Sheet

It's one of the great ironies of motherhood: You put a child down for a nap -- and all he wants to do is play and play. Huh? After all, if someone offered to take you into a cozy, darkened room, tuck you in and command you to do nothing but happily snooze away, you certainly wouldn't resist.

So today, we're commanding you to nap in true princess style. Nothing's more conducive to terrific sleep than smooth, cool, brand-new sheets. Take advantage of the end-of-summer sales and buy yourself some luxurious new bedclothes. We think the cotton linens available at Garnet Hill are ideal. Pure Danish cotton with unusual and interesting patterns, they make up a beautiful bed. Also, Ralph Lauren's line of bed linens wash to a rich, silky smoothness and can be found at most major department stores. For ultimate softness, wash and dry new sheets a few times before using them.  Your Royal Highness, the land of nod awaits!

Vive la France!

Your travel coffee mug has become your most important accessory of late -- the adult equivalent of a sippy cup. You need your caffeine, and you're always in a rush; ergo, the coffee travels with you.

If you can't remember the last time you drank coffee out of a real china cup, let alone the last time you drank coffee while it was still hot, you'll appreciate today's indulgence. Let's go to France.

Too late to get a babysitter to cover a wee trip across the pond? Settle for a French-style moment then! Dress up a little nicer than usual and take yourself off to a nearby cafe. If there's one thing French women do know about -- aside from how to be thin, supposedly -- it's that dressing up makes you feel a whole lot better!

Sit quietly, read a book, catch up on journal entries (or, if you're like us, finally start making some journal entries) and watch the world go by as you enjoy a hot, creamy cafe au lait. We can't promise rude waiters or smelly cheese, but we can assure you that this is how coffee should be enjoyed. Coffee out of a travel mug may seem like a necessity, but once you've remembered what a real, hot cup of coffee enjoyed slowly tastes like, you'll know what the real necessity is. And keep in mind, this is an indulgence that bears repeating.

Book It: Long Shelf Life

Here's something we're sure you haven't done in a while: Browse slowly through a bookstore. Really slowly. With no one tugging at your coattails, desperate for story hour.

Today's indulgence: Take yourself to the library or a bookstore, and just meander. Catch up with the best-sellers. Enjoy some quiet time in a very quiet place. Indulge one of your passions -- cooking, architecture, art or whatever -- by finding yourself some elegant coffee-table books and a place to sit and luxuriating over the pictures. Or find a new novel and get a head start on it before you get home. Interruption-free reading is bliss.

And from our soapbox we offer this suggestion: No reading parenting or child-care books while you're out. You're a great parent, and the thing that's going to keep you a sane, happy parent is a little quiet time for yourself -- not more advice on how to be a better caregiver.

Just For Moms - Your Daily Indulgence

365 Daily Indulgences, 2007 Daily Calendar

"Live life to the fullest," is an overused cliché, but to Erika Oller’s zany characters, it’s a mantra. They take self-indulgence to a level that even Elvis would have envied. Erika’s irreverent, hilarious cartoons appear on greeting cards, calendars and other products, making her one of North America’s favorite female humorists. Indulge yourself with her calendar. Your year will be a lot more fun!

Attention (Last-Minute) Shoppers!

"Attention shoppers! There is a sale on everything you don't need, the checkout lines are out the door, there are absolutely no sales associates willing to help you find that in a different size or color, and if you are even thinking of bringing your baby inside this mall, good luck getting out."

Whoever coined the term "retail therapy" hasn't tried it during the month of December. For such a holly, jolly season, the holidays can really ruin a good shopping trip.

If you still have last-minute purchases to make, try these tips:

  • "If you think going to the mall at 2pm on the Saturday before Christmas is a good idea, you should probably stay home. I always try to do final shopping trips at specialty stores far away from the malls and on the weekdays early in the morning. Stave off the crowds." --Ann

  • "It's always busy, but some places have seasonal extended, late-night hours so you don't have to rush from work to get stuff done. I usually go home, relax a bit, have my husband stay home with the kids and I grab a friend to hit the stores with at 8 or 9pm" --Dia

  • "Why would anyone do anything besides online shopping? Plus, I'm able to find far better gifts that really fit people's personality because I'm not limited by what's in stock. Many sites gift wrap, and most of them don't charge for shipping and handling during the holiday month." --Katherine

  • "I always take up a new hobby in the fall, and I make sure it's one that I can use for gift giving. I learned to knit one year and made scarves for everyone. It saves money, stress and is actually fun for me. This year, I'm baking cookies." --Shawn

A Necessary Daily Indulgence

If you're finding that your children's time-outs are as much for you as they are for them, you may want to consider a real time-out for yourself: Learn meditation.

We thought we didn't have time to learn meditation. Then we realized how absurd that sounded. Take some time today to try this easy, downloadable stress reducer.

Click on the link above to listen, or right-click the link and select Save Target As to save the MP3 to your desktop or portable MP3 player. You can also print the text version from the page. Then take yourself off to a quiet place (your bedroom with the door locked, a nearby park or a hidden spot under a tree in the backyard -- you don't want prying eyes to distract you). Then lie down and do something you probably haven't done in a while: Just focus on your thoughts and your breathing.

Meditation will transport you better than any vacation and, better yet, teach you skills that will relax you and help you cope with life's stresses, on the off chance you have any...

A Puzzling Indulgence

Don't you hate when people assume that once you become a mom your mind is nothing more than a storage space for Wiggles lyrics? Well, if you want to prove them wrong, remember that the pen is mightier than the sword.

Need another clue? Okay, it's a game of words in numbered squares. And it's 8 Across.

That's right. Fight back against the simple-minded-mom stereotype with a crossword puzzle. Scientists around the world advocate these puzzles as a way of exercising the mind and extending the average life span. Doing crosswords is also recommended for those wanting to protect themselves from memory loss and Alzheimer's disease. Even the surgeon general encourages the age-old brain booster for all ages, so get the kids a crossword of their own and play together.

But if the idea of getting through the New York Times crossword has got you both "cross" and "down," don't worry. You can pick up today's edition -- the newspaper's puzzles escalate in difficulty from Monday to Saturday, and an extra-large one appears every Sunday -- or go online to find ones that range in skill level and topic: You can define and decode all you want with puzzles focused on entertainment, current events and, yes, even parenting.

See how far you can get without using any outside resources. Then do some sleuthing to fill in the tough terms. After finishing the crossword, you can astound your (12 Down: Skeptics...) naysayers with sparkling wit and gasp-inducing puns.

You Told Us!

We asked for some of your favorite ways to indulge while you're out and about:

  • "I take my daughters to the bookstore. I get to have a nice relaxing cup of coffee while they get to read books! It's a win-win for my entire family -- a little quiet time for one tired mommy without having to feel guilty." --Amy

  • "When it's too hot for the park or we're bored of the house, we'll drive up to our local fast-food joint. I buy my son a kids' meal and myself an ice cream, and I let him play in the play area for hours -- it's also a great place to meet other single parents. By the time we leave, he's tuckered out and I've spent less than $5." --Anita

  • "I'll take a trip to the drugstore and slowly browse through the aisles for goodies like facial masks and hair repair stuff. Then I go home and fill the tub with hot water for an extra-long bath using all the treats I picked up at the store and with my favorite music playing. When the day is done, I feel refreshed and extra beautiful." --Robyn

  • "I'm a single mom and have not been out on a date in a while. So I go on dates with my four-year-old son. We go to the drive-in movie or out to eat. It makes him feel special, but it's also a treat for me to go out and do something." --Katie

Uncharted Territory

Have you ever created one of those chore charts for the family? You know, the ones that remind your son to do the dishes on Monday and your daughter to clean her room on Thursday? Make space on the fridge to include another chart. This one's for you, and it's anything but a chore.

Here's what you'll need:
-A piece of paper or card stock
-Markers
-Some  issues of  our newsletter for inspiration

Here's what you'll do:
At the top of the page, give your chart a title. "Daily Indulgences 'Chore' Chart" will work just fine. Draw the letters blocked or loopy, whatever will make them stand out. Then, across the page, write every day of the week.

Now for the fun part. Because your mental chore checklist is never-ending and you're so used to structure, you don't make the time to be spontaneous. Well, screw spontaneity. Plan it if that's what it takes. Underneath each day, write down something simple that you'd love to do if you just had the time. Include projects you keep putting off, date nights that never happen and the small stuff you do sweat. For example:

  • Monday: Read a chapter of my book

  • Tuesday: Call an old friend

  • Wednesday: Update the photo albums

  • Thursday: Give myself a mani/pedi

  • Friday: Have a movie night with my hubby

  • Saturday: Go window-shopping for an hour

  • Sunday: Take a relaxing bath

Reinforce the chart by plugging these to-do's into your planner. Once you make something a part of your schedule, you're far more likely to do it for the simple satisfaction of checking it off when you're done. Then you can post the chart so the whole family can see it and support it. Now get to work!

Know a mom who needs an indulgence chart of her own? Forward this.
